2021 Auditions: What to Expect & How to Prepare

As we close out another awesome year with the State Dance Company and the Panoramic Dance Project, we are sad to see our seniors go, but we are looking forward to having new men and women join our amazing dance companies. Whether you are considering auditioning for the State Dance Company or the Panoramic Dance Project, here is what to expect and how to prepare.

When Are Auditions Held in 2021?

2021-2022 auditions will be by virtual submission. All forms and videos must be received no later than August 20, 2021. Callbacks will be held in-person on the following dates:

Panoramic Dance Project: Monday, August 23, 2021, from 6 until 7:30 p.m.

State Dance Company: Tuesday, August 24, 2021, from 6 until 7:30 p.m.

You may be informed as late as 24 hours before the callback so please keep the dates on your calendar.

Who Can Audition?

All NC State students, regardless of academic major or prior dance experience, are welcome to audition.

How Do I Audition?

You may virtually audition for both companies or only one. Callbacks will be face to face. Fill out the State Dance Company Form and/or the Panoramic Dance Project Form online before Friday, August 20, 2021. No auditions will be accepted after this date.

There is a place to upload a video on each form.

Video Audition Requirements: This section may include combinations from dance classes, a choreographed solo, improvised movement, etc. Movement can be in any dance style, a variety of dance styles and be self or instructor choreographed (or a combination of both).

Length: Please note that the video should not exceed three minutes in length.

Format: Your audition video may be submitted via video form by pasting a link to a shared video (ie. YouTube) into the form. To ensure your privacy, it is suggested to upload your video to online platforms as “unlisted.” This will enable us to view the video, but not allow others to find it via the search.

Should I Audition for the State Dance Company or Panoramic Dance Project?

NC State students can audition for both companies, however, you are only allowed to be in one company. When deciding which company to audition for, look at when rehearsals are and decide whether you would like to focus more on modern (State Dance Company) or African/Latin/hip-hop (Panoramic Dance Project).

About State Dance Company

Learn, perform, and grow with a nationally recognized modern dance company. As a member of the State Dance Company, you’ll perform the choreography of artistic director Tara Mullins and annual guest artists. Tara Mullins is the director of the NC State Dance Program and has been nominated twice for a Chancellor’s Creating Community Award and received an NC State Outstanding Teacher Award in 2018. Rehearsals are on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons, Tuesday evenings, some Saturdays. However, these days are subject to change. Students receive two credit hours per semester for participation.
