Sitarist Indrajit Roy-Chowdhury to Give Lecture-Recital as part of PMC Series 11/14

New York based sitarist Indrajit Roy-Chowdhury will return to the Triangle area to give a lecture and performance for NCSU Students and the Raleigh Community on November 14th, 2017. Joining him will be Uchhal Banerjee, an accomplished tabla player and exponent of the Farrukhabad gharana playing style. The event is part of the ongoing PMC (Price Music Center) Lecture Series, which is hosted and organized by NCSU Music Department Professor Dr. Jonathan Kramer and Lecturer Dr. Alison Arnold.

Dr. Kramer and Mr. Roy-Chowdhury have known each other for over fifteen years. They met when Mr. Roy-Chowdhury was an undergraduate student at Duke University, where Dr. Kramer is an Adjunct Professor of Ethnomusicology. Mr. Roy-Chowdhury had been studying sitar with an Indian guru since early childhood, but his student days were divided between music and medicine. “I was delighted when I learned that, after graduation, he chose the path of music,” said Dr. Kramer.

Mr. Roy-Chowdhury maintains an international career performing traditional Hindustani classical music. He also collaborates with musicians and organizations of other genres, such as cross-over artist Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz Orchestra of Lincoln Center. He will perform in the traditional Hindustani style and give a talk on his development and career as an Indian classical musician in New York City.

The lecture is free and open to all NCSU students as well as the public. It will take place at the Kennedy-McIlwee Studio Theater at 7 PM.
