Auditions: What to Expect & How to Prepare

As we close out another awesome year with the State Dance Company and the Panoramic Dance Project, we are sad to see our seniors go, but we are looking forward to having new men and women join our amazing dance companies. Whether you are considering auditioning for the State Dance Company or the Panoramic Dance Project, here is what to expect and how to prepare.

When and Where Are Auditions?

Auditions for the NC State dance companies are held the second week of the Fall semester in August. Auditions for both companies take place in Carmichael Dance Studio 2307 at 6 p.m. and last around 90 minutes. Panoramic Dance Project – Monday, August 26, 2019. State Dance Company – Tuesday, August 27, 2019

Who Can Audition?

All NC State students, regardless of academic major or prior dance experience, are welcome to audition.

What Can I Expect?

If you’re auditioning for the State Dance Company, you’ll be taught and asked to perform a phrase from our repertory. You’ll also be given a short composition problem. If you’re auditioning for the Panoramic Dance Project, you’ll learn and perform two short phrases from the company repertory. You’ll also have a chance to make up your own short dance phrase based on a theme given to you at the audition.

What Should I Wear?

No special attire is necessary—just wear comfortable dance clothes. You’ll audition in bare feet.

What Should I Do to Prepare?

You don’t need to prepare anything—just show up ready to dance. Registration isn’t required, but we would love to know ahead of time if you’re interested in auditioning. Contact us at danceprogram@ncsu.edu or 919.515.7034.

Should I Audition for the State Dance Company or Panoramic Dance Project?

NC State students can audition for both companies, however, you are only allowed to be in one company. When deciding which company to audition for, look at when rehearsals are and decide whether you would like to focus more on modern (State Dance Company) or African/Latin/hip-hop (Panoramic Dance Project).

About Panoramic Dance Project

Members of the Panoramic Dance Project train in a diverse range of dance styles, including modern, jazz, hip-hop, African, and Latin. They take technique classes, work with highly-trained dance teachers, and develop their own choreography. Francine Ott is the artistic director of the company. She received her B.F.A. in Dance from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and studied at many dance intensives, including the American Dance Festival and Jacob’s Pillow, where she received scholarships. Rehearsals are held on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6 until 9 p.m. and the first and third Saturdays of the month from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Students receive one credit hour per semester for participation.

About State Dance Company

Learn, perform, and grow with a nationally recognized modern dance company. As a member of the State Dance Company, you’ll perform the choreography of artistic director Tara Mullins and annual guest artists. Tara Mullins is the director of the NC State Dance Program and has been nominated twice for a Chancellor’s Creating Community Award and received an NC State Outstanding Teacher Award in 2018. Rehearsals are on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons, Tuesday evenings, and every other Saturday morning. However, these days are subject to change. Students receive two credit hours per semester for participation.
