About CONTRA-TIEMPO

CONTRA-TIEMPO is a bold, multilingual Los Angeles-based dance company creating physically intense and politically astute performance work that moves audiences to imagine what is possible.

They create a new physical, visual, and sonic vocabulary that collages Salsa, Afro-Cuban, hip-hop, and contemporary dance with theater, compelling text, and original music to bring dynamic multi-modal experiences to the concert stage.

While their performances are consistently electrifying, what sets the company apart most is their unique relationship to their community. CONTRA-TIEMPO takes an uncompromisingly radical approach to the ways in which artists function within communities and create their work. They intentionally engage diverse audiences, cultivate dancer leaders, and center stories not traditionally heard on the concert stage, using their engagement process to inform and continuously re-fuel their creative process, and vice-versa.

A Look Back at CONTRA-TIEMPO + NC State Dance

This is not the first time the NC State Dance Program has had the pleasure of working with CONTRA-TIEMPO. In early 2017, dancers from CONTRA-TIEMPO set “Agua Furiosa,” choreographed by director Ana Maria Alvarez on the Panoramic Dance Project. This piece was performed in spring 2017 in the Stewart Theatre –– on the same stage CONTRA-TIEMPO performed “Agua Furiosa” in 2016 presented by NC State LIVE.

In the summer of 2017, Brooke Yannayon and Matthew Wright, both alumni of the NC State Dance Program, completed Futuro Summer Dance Intensive in Los Angeles, CA that was led by CONTRA-TIEMPO. Brooke and Matthew first met CONTRA-TIEMPO at NC State University during its residency with the Panoramic Dance Project.

In October of 2017, the NC State Dance Program took the stage in Washington D.C. at the ACCelerate Festival of Creativity and Innovation, showcasing innovative university projects that combine art, science, and humanities to address global challenges. The Panoramic Dance Project was invited to perform “Agua” for this festival.

We love hosting CONTRA-TIEMPO and we are looking forward to having them back to NC State in October 2019. Thank you to NC State LIVE and PNC for making this possible.
