State Dance Company Experiences “Technology, Assessment, and Artistry” at NCDEO Conference

A large aspect of training with the NC State Dance Program is having the opportunity to travel and perform in a variety of different conferences and venues. On February 22, 2020, the State Dance Company journeyed to Charlotte, NC, to take classes and perform a piece from their upcoming concert.

For the last four years, NC State Dance Program has attended the North Carolina Dance Education Organization Conference to learn from different artists and educators in the local dance community. Several universities, high schools, and educators were in attendance. This conference also creates the opportunity for students to network with dance educators and explore new career paths in the field.

Dancers were able to experience a wide variety of different classes, ranging from “Exploring the technology of dance technique through improvisation” to “Use of language for artistic enhancement.” Company members also participated in “Community Moves,” a modern dance class with NC State Guest Artist, Gerri Houlihan (pictured above).

After participating in several sessions, dancers finished the conference by performing a piece by Monica Bill Barnes & Company called All The Things We Do. Several other North Carolina Universities were represented during the day-long conference.

These opportunities to travel also foster community within the NC State Dance Program Companies, as dancers spend time working together and supporting each other before their concert in the spring.

To see these dancers in action, attend one of our NC State Dance Program Performances in the upcoming months.
