Oh beautiful night!
Am Himmel märchenhaft erglänzt der Mond in seiner ganzen Pracht;
The moon is fabulously shining in its complete splendour in the sky;
Um ihn der kleinen Sterne liebliche Genossenschaft.
Around it, sweet company of little stars.

Es schimmert hell der Tau am grünen Halm;
The dew is shimmering brightly on the green blades of grass;
Mit Macht im Fliederbusche schlägt die Nachtigall, Der Knabe schleicht zu seiner Liebsten sacht.
The nightingale sings ardently in the lilac bush, The boy steals softly to his lover.

O schöne Nacht!
Oh beautiful night!

Der graue Nebel tropft so still herab
The gray mist drips so silently
auf Feld und Wald und Heide,
Down on field and forest and heath,
als ob der Himmel weinen will
As if the heavens wished to weep
in übergroßem Leide.
In overwhelming grief.

Die Blumen wollen nicht mehr blühn,
The flowers will bloom no more;
die Vöglein schweigen in den Hainen,
The little birds are silent in the groves.
es starb sogar das letzte Grün,
Even the last green is dead-
da mag er auch wohl weinen.
Thus the heavens may well weep.

Friedlich bekämpfen Nacht sich und Tag;
Night and day are engaged in peaceful struggle
wie das zu dämpfen, wie das zu lösen vermag.
as if they are able to dampen or to dissolve.
Der mich bedrückte, schläfst du schon, Schmerz?
Are you asleep, Grief, who depressed me?
Was mich beglückte, was war’s doch, mein Herz?
Freude wie Kummer, fühl ich, zerran,
What was it then, my heart, that made me happy?
aber den Schlummer führten sie leise heran.
Both joy and sorrow, I feel, did melt away
Und im Entschweben, immer empor,
but gently they introduced the slumber.
kommt mir das Leben ganz wie ein Schlummerlied vor.
And, while evermore floating upward,
life itself appears to me like a lullaby.

Warum doch erschallen
Why then do songs resonate
himmelwärts die Lieder?
Ever up towards heaven?
Zögen gerne nieder Sterne,
They would draw down the stars
die droben blinken und wallen,
That twinkle and sparkle above;
zögen sich Lunas lieblich Umarmen,
Or Luna’s lovely embrace;
zögen die warmen, wonnigen Tage
Or the warm, blissful days
seliger Götter gern uns herab!
Of the blessed gods towards us!

Blow the trumpet in the new moon
in insigni die solemnitatis vestrae.
on the day of great solemnity.

Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est.
Where charity and love are, God is there.
Congregavit nos in unum Christi amor.
Christ’s love has gathered us into one.
Exultemus, et in ipso iucundemur.
Let us rejoice and be pleased in Him.
Timeamus, et amemus Deum vivum.
Let us fear, and let us love the living God.
Et ex corde diligamus nos sincero. Amen.
And may we love each other with a sincere heart. Amen.
