Behind the Process of Creating Dance Art with NC State Dance Faculty

Get a glimpse into the rehearsal process as NC State dance faculty, alumni and guest artists prepare for the Fall 2024 Dance Faculty Concert.

The Department of Performing Arts and Technology is starting off the 2024-2025 concert season with The Dance Faculty Concert. The performance will include four choreographic works made for stage and film, as well as performances by NC State alumni. Keep reading to learn more about each work.

Allison Beaty | entre-deux

The department’s newest dance faculty member, Allison Beaty, will premiere her new dance film, entre-deux. This work is a further exploration of a duet created with the students of Austin Community College in the spring of 2024, originally performed live in Austin, TX. It is inspired by the labor, care and close connections that are necessary in liminal seasons of life.

Amy Love Beasley | Experiments in Softening

Amy Love Beasley will present a new quartet with State Dance Company alumni Virginia Bettini, Delaney Galvin, Alexa Simeonsson and LilyGrace Wolfe. The piece is based on a process undertaken with these artists, who are integral to the piece for their creative contributions and movement solutions. Guided by movement and drawing experiments that explored ease, circularity and defining and redefining the self in relation to others, the resulting work looks at softness as power.

Autumn Mist Belk | Fashion Briefs (excerpts)

Autumn Mist Belk is bringing the multimedia dance company Code f.a.d. Company (based in Raleigh from 2008-2020) back together for a performance of excerpts from her 2012 evening-length work Fashion Briefs. The full version of Fashion Briefs includes 12 dance and projection segments, each inspired by the lives, stories or art of famous fashion houses – elegance, attitude and murder! Belk will present six sections in this August concert, performed by herself and six of the founding Code f.a.d. Company dancers, including two State Dance Company alumni.

Tara Z. Mullins | After Invisible

Tiana Smith, a recent State Dance Company alumna, will be performing After Invisible, a solo choreographed by Tara Z. Mullins. The piece premiered in the State Dance Company concert in April 2023. It is based on the character Miriam from Monica West’s novel Revival Season. West generously worked with Mullins and Smith on the creation of this piece. It is a haunting work about a young woman who is coming of age in an environment that she no longer trusts.
