CHAMBER SINGERS

The 42nd Psalm, Mvt. 1: Wie der Hirsch schreit

Felix Mendelssohn

Wie der Hirsch schreit nach frischem Wasser,
Like as the hart desireth the water-brooks,
So schreit meine Seele, Gott, zu Dir.
so longeth my soul after thee, O God.

Sestina: Lagrime d’Amante al Sepolcro dell’Amata

Claudio Monteverdi

  1. Incenerite Spoglie
  1. Dunque amate reliquie

Texts and Translations

Lagrime d’Amante al Sepolcro dell’Amata
Tears of the Lover at the tomb of the beloved

Incenerite spoglie, avara tomba
Remains turned to ashes, at the miserly tomb
Fatta del mio bel Sol, terreno Cielo,
made earthly paradise by my fair sun,
ahi lasso! I’ vegno ad inchinarvi in terra.
alas and alack, I come to lay you in earth.
Con voi chius’è ‘l mio cor a marmi in seno,
With you is my heart buried deep in a marble vault,
e notte e giorno vive in foco, in pianto,
and night and day the tormented Glaucus
in duolo, in ira, il tormentato Glauco.
lives in flames, in sorrow and in anger.

Dunque, amate reliquie, un mar di pianto
Therefore, beloved remains, will these eyes
Non daran questi lumi al nobil seno
not shed a sea of tears over the noble breast
D’un freddo sasso? Eco! L’afflitto Glauco
of this cold stone? Hark, wretched Glaucus makes
Fa rissonar «Corinna»: il mare e ‘l Cielo,
ocean and heaven resound with his cry, “Corinna”;
Dicano i venti ogn’or, dica la terra
may the earth and all the winds utter forth:
“Ahi Corinna! Ahi Morte! Ahi tomba!”
“Ah, Corinna! Ah, Death! Ah, Grave!”

Cedano al pianto
Let words yield to tears,
I detti! Amato seno
beloved breast;
A te dia pace il Cielo,
may heaven give you peace;
Pace a te, Glauco
peace to you, Glaucus,
Prega, honorato tomba
you who pray at this honoured grave,
E sacra terra.
this sacred ground.
