About the piece
This work is inspired by work undertaken by researchers in NC State’s Crop and Soil Sciences and the Gage Lab, particularly looking at heirloom maize and its genetic potential for creating sustainable crops in a changing climate. It reflects care, a celebration of diversity, and interdependence alongside the the invitation of wind, wide open spaces and rows of corn with open hands, connection, and joy.
The title, “The Wind Has Ideas” is borrowed from the poem Rogue Corn by Nikki Wallschlaeger.

About the piece
“sweetpotato suite,” is a trio inspired by the North Carolina Sweetpotato Commission’s mission and production process. With movement generated by choreographer and dancers, the work is a reflection of planting, growth, harvest, and storage of the orange vegetable. With thoughtful fun and pensive flair, the dancers swipe, dig, toss, carry, and glean the space around them in representation of the farmer’s tender care during a year in the life of the N.C. Covington Sweetpotato.
This piece is made possible by an Arts and Science Grant from the Office of Interdisciplinary Programs and Arts NC State.

About the piece
Cultivation explores relationships between care and control within an interconnected system. Dancers navigate tensions between nurturing and shaping through an evolving ecosystem in the natural landscape they inhabit, moving through stages of awareness, care, control, and release. Inspired by the cycles of growth and transformation in the natural world, the work asks what it means to care for something while allowing it to change beyond our control.

About the piece
Among the Flowers was created in collaboration with K Brinson and Erin Logan of the Ethnobotany Lab at NC State University led by Dr. Jillian De Gezelle. Through an embodied, somatic lens, this screendance explores the relationship between the ecosystems around us and the ecosystems in our bodies. Inviting audiences to reconsider their relationship with Nature as active participants, the film reflects on memory held in the landscape, the interconnectedness of human and natural worlds, and our role in shaping the environment we inhabit. What might we notice, remember, and change through greater awareness?
This screendance was made possible by an Arts and Science Grant from the Office of Interdisciplinary Programs and Arts NC State.
Faculty and Guest Artists
Amy Beasley
Amy Love Beasley (MFA Choreography, UNC Greensboro, BA Studio Art, College of Charleston) is a movement artist whose upbringing in the North Carolina mountains shaped her path toward embodied research, interdisciplinary practices, and practices in presence exploring interconnection. Beasley was fortunate to perform and study with artists and educators BJ Sullivan, Sean Sullivan, Gerri Houlihan, Niki Juralewicz, Jill Green, John Gamble, and Jan Van Dyke. Her formative training expanded in NYC with a dance home at Movement Research, which also influences the post-modern practices she teaches. Beasley’s work often explores intersections of movement, mindfulness, and visual art. She has presented at CAM Raleigh, the Gregg Museum, the North Carolina Dance Festival, the North Carolina Museum of Art, Art-o-Matic (DC), Triskellion’s Waxworks (Brooklyn), the Center for Performance Research (Brooklyn), and several universities. Beasley is an Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of Performing Arts & Technology at NC State University where she teaches in both dance and somatics classrooms and co-directs Terrain Dance Project, a site-specific dance company. She has recently presented research at NDEO, ISMETA, NOFOD, and ACDA and co-authored the article Pedagogy of Care in Pilates, published in the Journal of Dance Education.
