Student composer wins Creative Artist Award with North Carolina-inspired piece

Studies have shown that music helps strengthen memory skills in children and adults. According to the Children’s Music Workshop, linking familiar songs to new information can help imprint that information on the brain. For Noah Baldwin, inventing melodies to memorize patterns in games wasn’t just a useful memory tool, but the origin of his passion for composing music.

Scholarship recipient carries on proud family saxophone tradition

Playing the saxophone is in Dylan Misenheimer’s blood. Counting him, there are six saxophonists in his family. For as long as he can remember, they’ve gotten together as an ensemble around the holidays to perform together.

12/1 Grains of Time celebrates 50th anniversary

Grains of Time, North Carolina's oldest all-male collegiate a cappella group founded in 1968, are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year. To celebrate five decades of Grains, they're putting together a special concert where the 2018-19 Grains will take the stage alongside alumni groups dating back all the way to the original founding members.

11/29 Symphonic Band performs music of America

Conducted by Chris Branam, the 50-member Symphonic Band will perform its fall concert on Thursday, Nov. 29, featuring Henry Filmore's "Americans We," Richard Vaughan Williams's "Folk Song Suite for Military Band," Brian Balmages's "Silence Overwhelmed," Frank Erickson's "Rhythm of the Winds," and Clifton Williams's "Dedicatory Overture."

Raleigh Civic Chamber Orchestra premieres first bluegrass viola concerto with ETHEL’s Ralph Farris

The Raleigh Civic Chamber Orchestra (RCCO) at NC State University will perform the world premiere of Donald Reid Womack’s Blue Ridge Seasons: A Bluegrass Concerto for Viola and Orchestra on Nov. 4.

10/26 Fall Choral Collage celebrates bounty of choral music

The Fall Choral Collage celebrates the bounty of choral music composed for mixed choir, soprano-alto and tenor-bass choirs, and features all three of NC State’s choral ensembles - State Chorale, Vox Accalia and the Singing Statesmen. Music will include mixed choir music of Asia and the South Pacific and a premier of a newly commissioned work for soprano-alto choir featuring arrangements of Appalachian folk songs.

11/4 Chamber orchestra premieres bluegrass viola concerto

The Raleigh Civic Chamber Orchestra will perform the world premiere of Donald Reid Womack’s Blue Ridge Seasons, a viola concerto inspired by the music of the southern mountains, with ETHEL’s Ralph Farris as soloist.
