Bio

Dr. Kathryn L. Brown (Lecturer, Entrepreneurial Studies in the Arts) teaches courses in arts marketing, arts venture planning, and introductory courses for students interested in exploring arts entrepreneurship as a potential career path. Before joining the NC State faculty (2015), Dr. Brown worked with Charlotte’s artist-entrepreneurs across disciplines at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, NC where she designed and taught arts entrepreneurship courses for the CPCC Small Business Center. 2011-2012, she taught entrepreneurship courses for musicians at the University of South Carolina as a graduate teaching assistant at the USC School of Music. An active member of the Society for Arts Entrepreneurship Education since its inaugural conference (2013), Dr. Brown is a frequent conference presenter, served on the organization’s board of directors as Treasurer (2018-2021), and currently serves on the editorial board for the society’s peer-reviewed publication, The Journal of Arts Entrepreneurship Education. She also serves as a peer reviewer and contributor to Artivate: A Journal of Entrepreneurship in the Arts. Dr. Brown’s most recent publication, “Jason Harrod, Singer Songwriter: Minding the Motivational Mix” in Cases on Arts Entrepreneurship (2023, Edward Elgar Press) is a business consulting case study and lesson plan for the arts entrepreneurship classroom, addressing the unique challenges and consulting needs of the artistically-motivated, artist-entrepreneur clients. Published in 2019, Dr. Brown’s dissertation, Stewarding College Music Training in America: The Emergence of Music Entrepreneurship Education and the National Association of Schools of Music, examines the emergence and development of arts entrepreneurship education as a field of study through the lens of NASM conference proceedings dating back to 1950. Her current research interests examine the wellness challenges college arts graduates confront as they transition from student to professional life.

Dr. Brown’s artistic journey began as a toddler, playing around on her grandparents’ 1980s “house organ.” By the seventh grade, she was totally in love with the clarinet, dreaming of playing in a symphony orchestra one day. Dr. Brown received her Doctorate of Musical Arts (DMA) in clarinet performance at the University of South Carolina; she holds a Master of Music from the University of Georgia and a Bachelor of Music from East Carolina University. She has over twenty years of entrepreneurial experience as a freelance musician and private music teacher, performing with numerous professional orchestras across the southeast and teaching clarinet and piano lessons to young children, teens, and adults. Her proudest accomplishment, however, is probably getting her two spunky cats— Zoticus (“Zot”) and Eunice (“Yoonie”)— to finally co-exist without (too much) bloodshed.
