John Manning

Applied Music Lecturer, Trumpet

Bio

Mr. Manning moved to the Triangle in June of 2021after retiring from over 20 years of Active Duty service in the U.S. Army’s “Hellcats,” the Field Music Group of the West Point Band. He is currently very active as a freelance trumpeter in the region, playing frequently with groups as diverse as the NC Symphony, NC Ballet, NC Opera, NC Jazz Repertory Orchestra and other local big bands, as well as events such as playing principal trumpet for Andrea Bocelli at PNC Arena and the screening of Harry Potter at the DPAC with live orchestra, as well as performing with The Temptations and The Four Tops. He began teaching at NC State University in the spring semester of 2023. Prior to joining the band at West Point, Mr. Manning played on the road with a big band, played on cruise ships, taught in Maryland and Pennsylvania, and played in and/or was stage manager for several shows at Busch Gardens Williamsburg over eight seasons. He holds a Master of Music degree in Trumpet Performance from the University of North Texas, and both a Bachelor of Arts in Trumpet Performance and a Bachelor Science in Music Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
